I started off this year with the best of intentions. I had plans to knit every day and get all of my projects done! I’ve done several, but found myself dreading picking up the needles. If you know me, you know that’s unlike me. I tried to trace down the root of my reluctance to knit and here’s what I found:

  1. My arm hurts when I knit. This means I need to find a new way to hold the needles, sit up straighter when I knit, take more frequent breaks during knitting and give my arm a chance to relax and heal.
  2. If I really dislike the pattern I’m knitting, but feel like I can’t get out of knitting it, (something I’m making for a customer or a particular pattern that a loved one wants),  I have a tendency to set it aside and procrastiknit. Yes, that’s a word. I just created it. Honestly, I’m sure that’s a word that someone else creatively came up with and I just happened to duplicate. lol
  3. If it’s a long knit, I put off doing it. I’ve found that when I’m dealing with long, complex rows and my mind isn’t in it, I will set it to the side. I think I crave simpler knits right now. I don’t have the luxury of starting one though.
  4. If I am exhausted from all of the holiday knitting, I will, oftentimes, find myself putting my needles down and picking up a good book instead.

I love knitting. It’s one of my favorite passions. I just haven’t felt like doing a lot of it. Due to deadlines and the fact that I gave my word, I will persevere and pick up the needles again.  But first, some more coffee!

Happy Holidays!

Outside my window……………………’s sunny and beautiful! It’s almost 65*! This December has been absolutely crazy weather-wise! It’s the perfect time to get Christmas lights up on the house. I had wanted to do it sooner, but it didn’t work out.

I am thinking………………..about everything Christmas! Cookies, decorations, presents, stockings, candy……..there’s so much stuff I need to do! I’m just going to take it one day at a time and enjoy the process. What gets done, gets done………….what doesn’t, doesn’t. It’s about family and spending time together.

I’m thankful for……………… family. I love spending time with them and enjoying their company. We had our annual extended family Christmas dinner. Not everyone was able to make it and we missed them, but those who were able to be there did enjoy spending time with each other and visiting.

From the kitchen…………………..the holidays have been tough on our diet! We are eating more clean and all the excess sugar is killing us! We’re trying to eat clean in between family functions and special get-togethers. I feel so much better when we do! We’re eating a lot of fresh veggies and watching carbs. It actually makes us feel better! I wish I could find some alternatives to all the candy and cookies!

I’m wearing……………….CLOTHES! No, seriously, I’m wearing a mint-colored tshirt, blue jean shorts and red nail polish! I’m going to change it out though. It’s awfully bright and I like more subdued colors. I painted my nails for our big family dinner.

I’m creating…………………….a knit scarf for Christmas, so I can’t post pics. You never know who might see it! 😉  I’m also creating a few hats for my guys for Christmas. I may have to give them an IOU, because time is getting away from me!

I am going…………………….to be putting together a jigsaw puzzle for Christmas! I can’t wait to get it out and get started on it. It’s going to be so much fun!

I am hoping………………………to get the house decorated today.  I’m also hoping to be able to sit down and make some table runners for Christmas gifts. I miss being able to sew. Too many irons in the fire, I suppose!

Around the house………………………….my daughter is in the shower, my hubby is enjoying some much-needed down time and I’m sitting here, typing away, and letting my hair dry from my shower earlier. It’s been a laid back morning.

One of my favorite things is…………………………Christmas! I love the fact that we’re celebrating the Birth of Jesus and that He came to this world to die for my sins and set me and others free from the bondage of slavery to the enemy. I love the sights and smells that go along with the holidays and the presents all wrapped up in pretty paper and bows. I love making candy and cookies and sharing with those I love. I love especially spending time with people I care about and being able to connect with those that I haven’t seen all year long. I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!! It’s my most favorite holiday!

A few plans for the week……………………………I’m getting this house decorated, buying candy-making supplies and getting a few gifts for stockings. It’s going to be a busy week.

Outside My Window

Outside my window……………… is cool, overcast and rainy. There is a breeze that’s making it very chilly. I’ve been trying to keep warm most of the day. It’s a cold that gets down into your bones.

I’m making…………………a shell afghan (crochet) and a granny square afghan. I just need to piece the granny square afghan together. I just started the shell afghan. I think I’m mostly doing it to pass time while I’m laid up. (sprained ankle)

I’m thankful for……………….my family. My daughter-in-law came over and planted flowers for me for Mother’s Day. I thought it was so sweet. My kids are so thoughtful. I’m thankful for that. My husband was also sweet and tried to buy me a water fountain for Mother’s Day. It was beautiful and I loved it, but we both agreed it would be impractical to buy it right now. He settled for taking me out to dinner. I thought that was really sweet and so thoughtful. My daughter bought me a beautiful set of wind chimes. So nice to sit on the porch and listen to them tinkling in the breeze.

From the kitchen………………I’ve been a bit busy lately. We’ve had chili, potato soup, beef stew……… you sense a theme here? It’s because it’s been down right chilly lately! Tonight hubby is grilling pork chops and I’m making fried taters and onions! It will be nice to have something other than soup/stew. I’m also thinking about making meatloaf and mashed potatoes later this week, after the leftovers are gone. I’ve been on quite a cooking streak. No one has complained though. <giggle>

I’m wearing………………denim shorts, a mint green colored top and I’m barefoot, of course! lol Oh yes, and a smile! 🙂

I’m creating………………….quite a mess in the office! I’ve got clothes everywhere. I really need to get it organized and get rid of things I don’t want. I’ve got such a mess going!

I’m going……………….back to see the surgeon Thursday to find out if I will need surgery or just a walking boot for my ankle. Oh the joys of twisting your ankle in a hole in the yard! I’m hoping he’ll just tell me to take it easy, but I have a feeling it may be a walking boot that he prescribes. <sigh>    I’m also going to celebrate the long weekend with my older son, who has a birthday this weekend. I have to go pick up a few things for him and spoil him good. He needs it. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t need a good spoiling on their birthday!

I am hoping………………that I’ll be able to get this house in shape to sell. We have an interested party. I just have to get it cleaned out! I might enlist some help with it! I’m also hoping to get this granny square afghan done soon!

Around the house…………………….hubby is at work, my daughter is in the living resting, my fur baby is asleep somewhere in the living room and I am in the office, staring at all of the clutter that needs to be weeded through.

One of my favorite things………………… when my husband and I cook together. I absolutely love it. I love being in the kitchen with him and visiting while we prepare the meal.

A few plans for the rest of the week…………………..hubby and I have a date, I have an appt with the surgeon, and I’m hoping to see my youngest son sometime. I have so much to do. I’m trying to take it one thing at a time. It’s so disheartening when I look at everything that needs done. Taking a break to go out with hubby and see my kids helps to break that up, so I don’t get too discouraged. Have to mix in some fun to keep going!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day! 🙂

The best laid plans of mice and men

The flu hit our house, fast and furious. We are so glad it’s finally gone! I’m hoping it doesn’t try to strike again. We’ve done a whole lot of nothing for the last several weeks! It’s good to finally feel well enough to get up and do something!

The hat I was trying to finish in the last post is finally done. I did indeed finish most of the projects in the bags I had laying around. I also managed to get my granny square afghan started. I have over 20 squares crocheted with the ends woven in! I have several more to do, but I have an excellent start and I’m sure it’s going to take quite awhile to finish it. I also have an order for another granny square blanket, so I will be picking up some yarn to get it started once this one is done.

Here are some pics of the squares I have already finished:

I was so pleased to have some many ready to put together. Not all of the ones shown were created by me. Some of them were made by another lady, but sadly she passed away before they could be finished. I’m making the afghan as a gift to her family members.

Here are some other of the other WIP’s  I had that I finally finished:

The hat (above) that took me forever to finish

Some beautiful socks I finished and finally the Highlighter dishcloth. The colors match the highlighters I used in my Bible! Too cool!

The mermaid blanket I made for my son’s girlfriend! It was finished and ready to give at Christmas! She loved it!

These were my Christmas gifts to me:

Aren’t they lovely!?!  I can’t wait to make something beautiful out of them! In the second photo, the two skeins on the right are the color way “Sunflower” by Frolicking Feet in a 100% merino base. I am making my daughter a shawl with them. I cannot wait to get started on it! She mentioned how lovely she thought the colors were, so I purchased it. She was very surprised when it came in the mail. I just need to find the right pattern to go with it and I will cast it on my needles!

Happy knitting!

The aftermath…

Christmas and presents and food and candy…….it’s all come and gone. We had a lovely holiday with the kids. We all visited and ate and had a wonderful time together.  I love it when the kids all get together and talk and visit. Hearing them laugh and cut up like they did when they were little makes me smile.

When the wrapping paper and boxes were all throw away, the candy and food had all been eaten…………and the kids had gone back to their places…………..we rested. They came over Christmas Eve and left that night. We got up late Christmas day, held our mugs of coffee and tried to brush the sleep out of our eyes. After two cups of coffee, I was ready to function. We had a few gifts that we opened and then we ate. Mostly, we rested all day.

I wasn’t able to make my husband a hat after all. My arm refused to cooperate and I just couldn’t do it. He later told me he didn’t really want another hat. I’m not sure what he wants instead. We’ll see. He has asked for a pair of socks, but honestly………I haven’t finished my own up! I’m having second sock syndrome and need to get busy working on it!

Last night I realized that I have to get busy on all of these projects I have sitting in bags all over my office/craft room. I’ve got them everywhere! I need to get them finished. So that’s my goal, once I’m able to actually knit again. I can probably crochet, so I’ll probably finish a granny square afghan and start another. I’ve been meaning to do a couple, anyway. I am hoping to have everything done by mid March. We’ll see how it goes. I’m thinking next year I will do my best to have everything off of my needles in December, so I can start 2018 fresh. I am not happy about having tons of projects on the needles this year. We’ll see how it goes.

Hope everyone is doing well with their projects! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

Things don’t always work out the way we plan….

What a roller coaster ride it’s been since I last updated! With multiple projects facing me and a ever-looming deadline, I started working as hard as I could on knit items. I finished the mermaid tail blanket and started and finished a knit hat. (the Ribelation) I did pretty good with it and was rushing to start another when it happened.

My arm started hurting like crazy. I couldn’t lift an empty coffee cup. My whole forearm hurt so bad I could have cried. It was awful. The only thing I’ve been able to do is pamper my way through it. I had to baby it along. I couldn’t even stand the pressure of having my coat sleeve rest on it while wearing my winter coat. I messed it up good, I guess.

After a week and a half of severe pain and not knitting at all, I was finally able to pick up my needles again last night. I have started another dishcloth as a gift and I will start and finish another hat. I have to do it when dh is gone to work though as it’s for him. Shhh……mum’s the word!

I’ve been trying to feel well enough to make candy and cookies. The kids are getting homemade candy in their stockings this year. I just can’t afford the store bought stuff and I have TONS of candy making supplies and cookie making ingredients. Homemade is always better in my opinion, anyway!

Between resting my arm and not doing much of anything, I’ve been watching a TON of knitting podcasts! There are so many wonderful ones out there!

Some that I enjoy are:

Those are just a few of the ones that I watch. I will post others later, but those will get you started, if you want to sit and watch some. I have had plenty of time to sit and watch them while my arm has been healing and I have been bitten by project bug again! So many neat ideas in their videos and just so much encouragement from these talented ladies. Please check them out!

My family could quite possibly think they’re not going to eat tonight. I should probably get up and fix dinner. Hope to update more later or possibly tomorrow.

It’s almost Christmas, everyone!  Hope you’re having a wonderful day/evening!

The tree is up and decorated! My sweet daughter did it for us this year. I’m thrilled to say it’s beautiful and such a wonderful treat to sit and look at it in the evening! It’s nice to have my knitting out and glance up every once in awhile and see the lights glowing.

Lots going on around the house! The mermaid tail blanket is DONE and I’m so thrilled! It was a fairly straightforward pattern, if you knew what to do with crocheting. I, however, am a knitter primarily and so it was a bit of a challenge for me. My friend helped me with it and I am soo grateful for her help! I managed to get it all finished up and it’s ready to go to its intended recipient. If you decide to do this pattern, there is a video on the webpage I linked to above and it shows you how to do it, step by step.

I also have cast on the Ribelation hat. It’s my next gift to knit up. I had thought about making a bunch of these for the guys on my list, but I’ll have to see how long it takes! It looks like a pretty quick knit, so I’m hoping it will work out.

My husband has asked me to knit him some socks. He has size 16 feet, y’all!!! I’m so tempted to buy him some wool socks, but I know he wants them to be hand knit. I’ll probably do them after the holidays though. So much knitting to get them done! I’m thinking of going with fisherman’s wool, but haven’t decided on a pattern. I’m also not sure if I can actually knit them with wool. I do have allergic reactions to wool sometimes, so I’ll have to be careful what I use.

The holidays………… seems that there is always something to contend with every year. This year is proving to be no exception. While I always hope that everyone will get along and there won’t be fighting, something usually happens. I’ve smiled through most of the junk, but to be honest……………..I’m really hurt. I fluctuate between hurt and angry and retreating from the persons involved. I just love Christmas and I hate it that there’s tension around the holidays. My heart is splintered, but I refuse to let it get me down. Next time I might have a different attitude. My desire is to please the Lord and keep my chin up.

The majority of the cookie/candy making supplies have been purchased and we will be in full on Christmas baking and candy making mode this week and weekend. I’m anxious to get a lot done and we will be doing tons of it throughout the next couple of days.

In order to continue on my weight loss journey, we will be bagging up goodies and sending them out the door almost as quickly as we finish them! I’ve already gained back some of the weight I had lost, so I need to get back on the weight loss band wagon. I’ve been somewhat better about going to the gym. I’m anxious to lose some of the holiday weight I’ve already gained over Thanksgiving.

Think I’ll slip into some jammies tonight and watch a movie with my family. I may even break out some knitting! Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. If you’re having a tough time emotionally with things, please know you are not alone! I understand and I know it isn’t easy sometimes. I’ve been battling a lot of “stuff” that has come my way. Know that I am praying for you. I may not know you, but God does. ((((Great big hugs))))
