Outside My Window

Outside my window………………..it is cool, overcast and rainy. There is a breeze that’s making it very chilly. I’ve been trying to keep warm most of the day. It’s a cold that gets down into your bones.

I’m making…………………a shell afghan (crochet) and a granny square afghan. I just need to piece the granny square afghan together. I just started the shell afghan. I think I’m mostly doing it to pass time while I’m laid up. (sprained ankle)

I’m thankful for……………….my family. My daughter-in-law came over and planted flowers for me for Mother’s Day. I thought it was so sweet. My kids are so thoughtful. I’m thankful for that. My husband was also sweet and tried to buy me a water fountain for Mother’s Day. It was beautiful and I loved it, but we both agreed it would be impractical to buy it right now. He settled for taking me out to dinner. I thought that was really sweet and so thoughtful. My daughter bought me a beautiful set of wind chimes. So nice to sit on the porch and listen to them tinkling in the breeze.

From the kitchen………………I’ve been a bit busy lately. We’ve had chili, potato soup, beef stew………..do you sense a theme here? It’s because it’s been down right chilly lately! Tonight hubby is grilling pork chops and I’m making fried taters and onions! It will be nice to have something other than soup/stew. I’m also thinking about making meatloaf and mashed potatoes later this week, after the leftovers are gone. I’ve been on quite a cooking streak. No one has complained though. <giggle>

I’m wearing………………denim shorts, a mint green colored top and I’m barefoot, of course! lol Oh yes, and a smile! 🙂

I’m creating………………….quite a mess in the office! I’ve got clothes everywhere. I really need to get it organized and get rid of things I don’t want. I’ve got such a mess going!

I’m going……………….back to see the surgeon Thursday to find out if I will need surgery or just a walking boot for my ankle. Oh the joys of twisting your ankle in a hole in the yard! I’m hoping he’ll just tell me to take it easy, but I have a feeling it may be a walking boot that he prescribes. <sigh>    I’m also going to celebrate the long weekend with my older son, who has a birthday this weekend. I have to go pick up a few things for him and spoil him good. He needs it. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t need a good spoiling on their birthday!

I am hoping………………that I’ll be able to get this house in shape to sell. We have an interested party. I just have to get it cleaned out! I might enlist some help with it! I’m also hoping to get this granny square afghan done soon!

Around the house…………………….hubby is at work, my daughter is in the living resting, my fur baby is asleep somewhere in the living room and I am in the office, staring at all of the clutter that needs to be weeded through.

One of my favorite things…………………..is when my husband and I cook together. I absolutely love it. I love being in the kitchen with him and visiting while we prepare the meal.

A few plans for the rest of the week…………………..hubby and I have a date, I have an appt with the surgeon, and I’m hoping to see my youngest son sometime. I have so much to do. I’m trying to take it one thing at a time. It’s so disheartening when I look at everything that needs done. Taking a break to go out with hubby and see my kids helps to break that up, so I don’t get too discouraged. Have to mix in some fun to keep going!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day! 🙂

The best laid plans of mice and men

The flu hit our house, fast and furious. We are so glad it’s finally gone! I’m hoping it doesn’t try to strike again. We’ve done a whole lot of nothing for the last several weeks! It’s good to finally feel well enough to get up and do something!

The hat I was trying to finish in the last post is finally done. I did indeed finish most of the projects in the bags I had laying around. I also managed to get my granny square afghan started. I have over 20 squares crocheted with the ends woven in! I have several more to do, but I have an excellent start and I’m sure it’s going to take quite awhile to finish it. I also have an order for another granny square blanket, so I will be picking up some yarn to get it started once this one is done.

Here are some pics of the squares I have already finished:

I was so pleased to have some many ready to put together. Not all of the ones shown were created by me. Some of them were made by another lady, but sadly she passed away before they could be finished. I’m making the afghan as a gift to her family members.

Here are some other of the other WIP’s  I had that I finally finished:

The hat (above) that took me forever to finish

Some beautiful socks I finished and finally the Highlighter dishcloth. The colors match the highlighters I used in my Bible! Too cool!

The mermaid blanket I made for my son’s girlfriend! It was finished and ready to give at Christmas! She loved it!

These were my Christmas gifts to me:

Aren’t they lovely!?!  I can’t wait to make something beautiful out of them! In the second photo, the two skeins on the right are the color way “Sunflower” by Frolicking Feet in a 100% merino base. I am making my daughter a shawl with them. I cannot wait to get started on it! She mentioned how lovely she thought the colors were, so I purchased it. She was very surprised when it came in the mail. I just need to find the right pattern to go with it and I will cast it on my needles!

Happy knitting!

The aftermath…

Christmas and presents and food and candy…….it’s all come and gone. We had a lovely holiday with the kids. We all visited and ate and had a wonderful time together.  I love it when the kids all get together and talk and visit. Hearing them laugh and cut up like they did when they were little makes me smile.

When the wrapping paper and boxes were all throw away, the candy and food had all been eaten…………and the kids had gone back to their places…………..we rested. They came over Christmas Eve and left that night. We got up late Christmas day, held our mugs of coffee and tried to brush the sleep out of our eyes. After two cups of coffee, I was ready to function. We had a few gifts that we opened and then we ate. Mostly, we rested all day.

I wasn’t able to make my husband a hat after all. My arm refused to cooperate and I just couldn’t do it. He later told me he didn’t really want another hat. I’m not sure what he wants instead. We’ll see. He has asked for a pair of socks, but honestly………I haven’t finished my own up! I’m having second sock syndrome and need to get busy working on it!

Last night I realized that I have to get busy on all of these projects I have sitting in bags all over my office/craft room. I’ve got them everywhere! I need to get them finished. So that’s my goal, once I’m able to actually knit again. I can probably crochet, so I’ll probably finish a granny square afghan and start another. I’ve been meaning to do a couple, anyway. I am hoping to have everything done by mid March. We’ll see how it goes. I’m thinking next year I will do my best to have everything off of my needles in December, so I can start 2018 fresh. I am not happy about having tons of projects on the needles this year. We’ll see how it goes.

Hope everyone is doing well with their projects! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

Things don’t always work out the way we plan….

What a roller coaster ride it’s been since I last updated! With multiple projects facing me and a ever-looming deadline, I started working as hard as I could on knit items. I finished the mermaid tail blanket and started and finished a knit hat. (the Ribelation) I did pretty good with it and was rushing to start another when it happened.

My arm started hurting like crazy. I couldn’t lift an empty coffee cup. My whole forearm hurt so bad I could have cried. It was awful. The only thing I’ve been able to do is pamper my way through it. I had to baby it along. I couldn’t even stand the pressure of having my coat sleeve rest on it while wearing my winter coat. I messed it up good, I guess.

After a week and a half of severe pain and not knitting at all, I was finally able to pick up my needles again last night. I have started another dishcloth as a gift and I will start and finish another hat. I have to do it when dh is gone to work though as it’s for him. Shhh……mum’s the word!

I’ve been trying to feel well enough to make candy and cookies. The kids are getting homemade candy in their stockings this year. I just can’t afford the store bought stuff and I have TONS of candy making supplies and cookie making ingredients. Homemade is always better in my opinion, anyway!

Between resting my arm and not doing much of anything, I’ve been watching a TON of knitting podcasts! There are so many wonderful ones out there!

Some that I enjoy are:

Those are just a few of the ones that I watch. I will post others later, but those will get you started, if you want to sit and watch some. I have had plenty of time to sit and watch them while my arm has been healing and I have been bitten by project bug again! So many neat ideas in their videos and just so much encouragement from these talented ladies. Please check them out!

My family could quite possibly think they’re not going to eat tonight. I should probably get up and fix dinner. Hope to update more later or possibly tomorrow.

It’s almost Christmas, everyone!  Hope you’re having a wonderful day/evening!

The tree is up and decorated! My sweet daughter did it for us this year. I’m thrilled to say it’s beautiful and such a wonderful treat to sit and look at it in the evening! It’s nice to have my knitting out and glance up every once in awhile and see the lights glowing.

Lots going on around the house! The mermaid tail blanket is DONE and I’m so thrilled! It was a fairly straightforward pattern, if you knew what to do with crocheting. I, however, am a knitter primarily and so it was a bit of a challenge for me. My friend helped me with it and I am soo grateful for her help! I managed to get it all finished up and it’s ready to go to its intended recipient. If you decide to do this pattern, there is a video on the webpage I linked to above and it shows you how to do it, step by step.

I also have cast on the Ribelation hat. It’s my next gift to knit up. I had thought about making a bunch of these for the guys on my list, but I’ll have to see how long it takes! It looks like a pretty quick knit, so I’m hoping it will work out.

My husband has asked me to knit him some socks. He has size 16 feet, y’all!!! I’m so tempted to buy him some wool socks, but I know he wants them to be hand knit. I’ll probably do them after the holidays though. So much knitting to get them done! I’m thinking of going with fisherman’s wool, but haven’t decided on a pattern. I’m also not sure if I can actually knit them with wool. I do have allergic reactions to wool sometimes, so I’ll have to be careful what I use.

The holidays…………..it seems that there is always something to contend with every year. This year is proving to be no exception. While I always hope that everyone will get along and there won’t be fighting, something usually happens. I’ve smiled through most of the junk, but to be honest……………..I’m really hurt. I fluctuate between hurt and angry and retreating from the persons involved. I just love Christmas and I hate it that there’s tension around the holidays. My heart is splintered, but I refuse to let it get me down. Next time I might have a different attitude. My desire is to please the Lord and keep my chin up.

The majority of the cookie/candy making supplies have been purchased and we will be in full on Christmas baking and candy making mode this week and weekend. I’m anxious to get a lot done and we will be doing tons of it throughout the next couple of days.

In order to continue on my weight loss journey, we will be bagging up goodies and sending them out the door almost as quickly as we finish them! I’ve already gained back some of the weight I had lost, so I need to get back on the weight loss band wagon. I’ve been somewhat better about going to the gym. I’m anxious to lose some of the holiday weight I’ve already gained over Thanksgiving.

Think I’ll slip into some jammies tonight and watch a movie with my family. I may even break out some knitting! Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. If you’re having a tough time emotionally with things, please know you are not alone! I understand and I know it isn’t easy sometimes. I’ve been battling a lot of “stuff” that has come my way. Know that I am praying for you. I may not know you, but God does. ((((Great big hugs))))

Outside my window…………..it is dreary and rainy. I’m so thankful that I don’t have to get out in it! It’s more than just dreary. It’s a cold rain. I doubt the guys will get much work done in this mess.

I’m thinking…………..about decorating this place up and starting the baking/candy making process. We had planned to do it this weekend, but things came up. I have to straighten up a few things before we can put the tree up. Getting in the kitchen will require a little more work. I still have to shop for all of the ingredients!

I’m thankful……………for so many things. We had a nice Thanksgiving. We were missing several family members and that stunk, but we enjoyed the ones who were able to be here. I’m wondering how next year will be. When we move, we won’t have family close by. It will just be us.

In the kitchen………………..well, to be quite honest, we haven’t done a lot in the kitchen. We got a new stove, cooked Thanksgiving dinner……………we have pork chops thawed out for tonight and hamburger for meatloaf tomorrow. I’m hoping to have leftovers on the days that we make candy and bake, so I don’t have to make meals. I only have so much energy and I want to exert it on making all the fattening stuff! <wink>

I’m creating………………..a mermaid tail blanket! I’m almost finished with the main body and then I can make the tail and attach it. I got a wonderful pattern from Yarnutopia and it’s fantastic. She even posted a video in case you get stuck! I’m also creating a camo hat or two and making dishcloths.

I’m reading…………..not much right now. I’m working in our Sunday school book and that’s about it. I need to get busy reading the Bible again. I’ve been kinda slack and I need to dig back into it.

I am hoping…………………that I’ll be able to get everyone what they want for Christmas. Every year I ask the kids and hubby for a list of things they would use/want. Every year I have to beg them and keep after them to get the list. I still don’t have a list for this year and I am beyond ready to buy gifts for them! I want to get it all done so I don’t have to worry about it.

Around the house………………..my daughter is sleeping in, my hubby is at work and the dog is in the living room, bemoaning the fact that she didn’t get a big juicy treat this morning. She has to be on a diet and she’s not happy about it at all. She also prefers to beg for treats throughout the day and “trick” us into believing that no one has given her anything. When we put our heads together, we discover that she’s been mooching off of all of us! She’s such a rotten turkey!

A few plans for the rest of the week……………..cooking, baking, candy making……….decorating this house up………….swimming and working off all of this weight from Thanksgiving………..also I need to get caught up on all of my knitting podcasts! There are only a few that I’m really into, but I haven’t been able to keep up with them. I’ve been too busy with holiday prep!

A few plans for today………………I’m going to finish cleaning and rearranging, decorate the house, maybe squeeze in a trip to the gym……………..I haven’t been in way too long…………and fix pork chops for dinner. I need to throw together that meatloaf for tomorrow, too. I will also be working on this mermaid tail blanket. I have to get it finished!

I hope your Thanksgiving was lovely and you were able to be with family. Until next time, I wish you peace and joy and HOPE!

More changes, several wonderful!

Quitting my job was one of the most difficult things I’ve done in a long time. The last time I posted things weren’t going well, but I naively assumed that I would “catch up” with the other trainees, or there would be more training. I didn’t. There wasn’t. The trainers, for the most part, were good. The training program was lacking. Our group was ushered into customer service quickly, without much warning, and ill-prepared. Some struggled through, but most quit. Among those, a woman who had been an eighteen year customer service rep. She was the only one brave enough to ask the question we were all thinking, “Is this a new training program that the company is implementing?”

In order to suppress my laughter, I clicked my microphone off and laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair. Yes, it was that bad.

Thankfully, I no longer work there.

So why was quitting so difficult?

It was like an admission of failure. I hate failure. Guess what!?! I failed at that job. Miserably. It was awful. I had customers get rude with me, hang up on me, get very upset and start yelling. All of it could have been avoided if they had taught me how to do the job! That was the frustrating part. I knew I could do the work. I just needed more training. They even promised to run me through the training again. I asked if it would be the same training and they responded with, “Yes, of course!”   No thank you.

Can I just say……………….BLECH!?!?!?!?

Now on to good things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We’ve been rearranging and cleaning and doing a LOT of work around here! It’s beginning to take shape and I’m so glad to say we’ll have this place cleaned up and looking terrific for the holidays!

Sorting through craft stuff in my bedroom has been a little bit slower of a go than I originally thought, so I’m having to step up the pace, but it will be done in plenty of time for Christmas. I’ve wanted to get my bedroom in order for awhile now, but things kept cropping up!

We got a stove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanksgiving and Christmas mean a lot of cooking and a lot of cooking means putting that new stove to good use! I’m looking forward to making cut out sugar cookies, dipped pretzels, fudge………….all those wonderful things that taste so good, but are so difficult to get off of your hips later! LOL

Knitting and crochet………………I’ve been working on a mermaid tail blanket for my son’s girlfriend. dishcloths/dish towel sets for all the girls in the family, and my husband just asked me to make some socks for his size 16 wide feet! EEEP!!!!! I will make them, but I’m a little bit worried about it. I don’t know how to figure sizing. I guess I will get a crash course in it!

I’ve also joined a MKAL! (mystery knit along) I can’t wait to see what it is!!! I’ve got a feeling it’s a cowl or a scarf. They said it was supposed to keep your head/neck warm. I don’t know, but I have some beautiful yarn just itching to be worked up into something pretty!

I also signed up for Yarn Box. They have 3 different options and I chose the sock box. I love making socks. So simple, yet so fun to knit! I have never joined anything like that. I’ve always just bought what I needed. The thought of yarn being delivered to my door, all squishy and pretty and ready to be knit up, is almost more than this knitter can stand! I cannot wait for my first box to arrive!!!!

I hate to go, but my fur baby has an appointment to get a hair trim. I will do my best to blog more than I have been. Now that I’m not working, it should be easier!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
